Doom was developed and published id Software. It was released on December 10, 1993 for DOS and is the first instalment of the ‘Doom franchise. The player takes on the role as a Space Marine who fights through hordes undead humanoids and invader demons.
The game starts on the moons of Mars. It ends in Hell. To find the exit, the player must traverse each level or defeat the final enemy. This is an early example 3D graphic video game. It has 2D enemies and objects, which are sometimes called 2.5D.
Doom is the third major release from id Software after Wolfenstein 3D and Commander Keen. In May 1992, id began developing a game that focused on the use of technology to fight demons. This game was developed using John Cartmack, the lead programmer. Tom Hall originally wrote a science-fiction plot.
However, he was removed from the project and the majority of the story. The final game featured an action-heavy, graphic design by John Romero, and Sandy Petersen. Id released Doom in three episodes, under the Shareware model. The first episode was made available for free to promote the full version.
A retail version of The Ultimate Doom with an extra episode was released in 1995 by GT Interactive. Doom became a commercial and critical success. It was named as one of the most influential and best video games ever. It was estimated that 3.5 million copies were sold by 1999 and 20 million people played it in the first two years after its release.
It is considered one of the most influential games of the genre and has been called the “father” or first-person shooter. This led to a slew of clones and a vibrant modders community, and the creation of speedrunning.

A Return to Form
With DOOM PC, the series has triumphantly returned to its origins, regaining the unadulterated brutality and raw energy that characterized the first few games. After years of combating hordes of demonic creatures, the lone marine turned Doom Slayer is assumed by the players.
Armed with legendary weapons like the shotgun, the BFG 9000, and the chainsaw, the Doom Slayer embarks on a perilous journey. He must traverse the treacherous terrain of Mars. His mission: unleash wrath on the demonic legions occupying the UAC research facility. Will he triumph against the infernal forces?
Gameplay: A Symphony of Violence
Doom is a first-person shooter presented with 3D graphics. While the environment is shown in a 3D perspective, the enemies and objects are instead 2D sprites rendered at fixed angles, a technique sometimes referred to as 2.5D graphics or billboarding.
In the single-player campaign mode, the player controls an unnamed space marine—later unofficially termed “Doomguy”—through military bases on the moons of Mars and in hell. To finish a level, the player must traverse through labyrinthine areas to reach a marked exit room. Levels are grouped into named episodes, with the final level of each focusing on a boss fight.
While traversing the levels, the player must fight a variety of enemies, including demons and possessed undead humans. Enemies often appear in large groups. The five difficulty levels adjust the number of enemies and amount of damage they do, with enemies moving faster than normal on the hardest difficulty setting.
The monsters have simple behavior: they move toward their opponent if they see or hear them, and attack by biting, clawing, or using magic abilities such as fireballs. The player must manage supplies of ammunition, health, and armor while traversing the levels. The player can find weapons and ammunition throughout the levels or can collect them from dead enemies, including a pistol, a chainsaw, a plasma rifle, and the BFG 9000.
The player also encounters pits of toxic waste, ceilings that lower and crush objects, and locked doors requiring a collectable keycard or a remote switch. Power-ups include health or armor points, a mapping computer, partial invisibility, a radiation suit against toxic waste, invulnerability, or a super-strong melee berserker status. Cheat codes allow the player to unlock all weapons, walk through walls, or become invulnerable.
Two multiplayer modes are playable over a network: cooperative, in which two to four players team up to complete the main campaign, and deathmatch, in which two to four players compete to kill the other players’ characters as many times as possible. Multiplayer was initially only playable over local networks, but a four-player online multiplayer mode was made available one year after launch through the DWANGO service.
Plot
Doom consists of three episodes. Each episode contains nine levels. “Knee-Deep in the Dead”, ‘The Shores of Hell’, and ‘Inferno. The Ultimate Doom expanded version added a fourth episode “Thy Flesh Consumed”. Doom was released two years later. Unnamed Marines are sent to Mars in the future after an officer assaulted them for ordering his unit to shoot at civilians. Union Aerospace Corporation operates radioactive waste sites on Mars and allows the military conducts secret Teleportation tests that become deadly. The marine is sent to protect Phobos after a base on Phobos requests urgent military assistance.
Deimos has disappeared completely. He is ordered to wait at the perimeter while the assault team is destroyed. He enters the base armed only with a pistol and no way to get off the moon. In “Knee-Deep in the Dead”, the Marine fights demons in the military and waste sites on Phobos. The episode concludes with the marine defeating the two powerful Barons guarding the teleporter leading to Deimos.
The marine is knocked out by an army of enemies after passing through the teleporter. He then awakens with a pistol. In “The Shores of Hell”, a marine battles corrupted research installations on Deimos. The fight culminates in the defeat of an enormous cyberdemon. He discovers from an overlook that the moon is floating over hell, and descends to its surface.
In “Inferno”, a marine fights his way through hell and defeats a cybernetic demon spider that is responsible for the invasion of moons.
